Eco-Friendly Organizing, Crafts – Part 4

by Angela on April 24, 2012

Some people think that getting organized is difficult and expensive.  This may be true if you are buying everything brand new, but what if you could repurpose some things you already have?  This is the fourth and final post of our Eco-friendly Organizing Series click here to see Part, 1, 2, or 3.  In this post we will look at ways to organize your crafts.

Organizing ribbon is a breeze by covering an old oatmeal canister with decorative paper and cutting an opening in the side.  This keeps ribbon from coming off the spool while still being able to see exactly how much ribbon you still have left.

{Photo from Craftbits.}

While the oatmeal canister in the first picture would work great for ribbon on a spool, this repurposed egg carton would be fantastic for loose ribbon that tends to end up in a tangled mess.  Poke holes in the top of empty egg cartons to store ribbon. Thanks Craftbits for this fantastic idea!

In the photo above you can see how Meagan from Craft Habit turned a plain Jane Pringles can into a fabulous storage container for her paint bushes.

You will quickly discover there are lots of options for Pringles cans like storing knitting needles.  Perfect!

I love this idea for sewing notions or tiny craft supplies.  Stick magnetic spice jars to a pizza pan to hold small craft items.  Simply attache the pizza pan to the wall.  You can even give it a quick coat of spray paint to give it a little splash of color.

Decorate small paint cans or soup cans with wallpaper scraps and use as desk organizers.  Hmm…I think I might try this with my upcoming desk makeover!

Monica from Crafty Nest used Freecycle to collect enough baby food jars in the same size to fit this spice rack.  She primed and painted the lids to match and then stored a variety of beads, buttons, etc.

If you still have some of those old film canisters laying around you can use them to organize and store your bobbins.  That way you can see the color of the tread easily.

Keep your yarn form ending up in a tangled mess by storing it in a baby wipe containers.  Stack up several containers high if needed and tape a small piece of yard to the outside of the box so you can easily identify the color.

So there you have it!  Tons of ideas for getting your crafts organized in eco-friendly way.  I think this may have inspired me to take thee eco-organizing challenge!  Are you inspired?  Which idea was your favorite?  Post a comment below to let me know.

If you are new to the blog welcome!  Today’s post is Part Three in an earth friendly organizing series including Eco-Friendly Organizing Kitchen-Part 2 and Eco-Friendly Organizing – The Office Part 1.  Today we will looking a few ways to organize kids.

Ooh, ahh.   Who knew an old tin can could look so good?!  Recycle old aluminum cans to hold kids’ craft items.  By using containers that are the same color and finish it automatically gives an impression of being more tidy and pulled together. Don’t forget to label the containers so everyone knows where things go.  Remember large easy to read labels work best.

Time and time again I hear from people who are struggling with what to do with all those stuffed animals.  I love this idea from BHG!  If you are like me you may have purchased one of these wall mounted baskets for you garden only to discover how quickly they dry out and your plants die.  Sigh......... but never fear you can turn that planter into comfy spot for kiddo's best friends.

{From Money See, Monkey Do}

How fun is this?!  It's so bright and beautiful kids might even be inspired to keep up with the organization!  Jen from Monkey See, Monkey Do gives you the DIY instructions on her blog for creating this fun crayon organizer by painting the inside of old baby food jars.

If you have not seen these baby food containers from Gerber you are missing out! Above Kierste from Brown Paper Packages shows us how we can store some girls hair accessories using these baby food containers.  All I can say is let your imagination go wild with these!  There are SO many ways you can use these.  I have used them to store hair accessories, tiny little toys that tend to get lost, Box Tops for Educations, change in drawers, stickers, and much more I'm sure.

{From Heart Of Wisdom}

Are you a big coffee drinker?  If so you can recycle those old coffee containers into toy organizers.  Robin from Hear of Wisdom shares label templates for a variety of things and she offers several other ideas on how you can use coffee containers in other ways.  Oh, and she also shares the secret behind getting the coffee smell out of the coffee cans!

Happy kid organizing with a twist of green!

Eco-Friendly Organizing, Kitchen – Part 2

by Angela on April 10, 2012

{From readymade.com}

In honor of Earth Day (April 22nd) this month I am bringing you some eco-friendly ways to organize different areas of your home. We'll look at some ways to organize using recycled containers and how you can make them more stylish.  The picture above from Ready Made is the triple threat of upcycling: it uses recycled material, it is functional, and it is stylish.  Oh and it's unique!  In the picture above Ready Made used 3 1/2" x 36" mailing tubes to create a unique and green wine rack. This is an amazing idea!

{From Frugal Decor Mom.}

Spice jars come in all shapes and sizes.  One way to trick the eye into making things look more organized is to use the same containers in the same colors.  Most people get that look by purchasing a new set of matching spice jars, but you can get that same look by using baby food jars with matching lids.  Lois at Frugal Decor Mom painted the lids with chalk board paint so you can easily label the lids and they look nice and tidy!  What a great idea!
