If you have children then you know how many different types of crayons, markers, pencils, pens, and more they can have. To tell you the truth, it’s a little crazy! The system I set up for my girls last year has not been working at all. So it was back to the drawing board.

I had purchased this super cute (yes, I actually said “super cute”) utensil caddy from Target last summer. I was so excited to find it because I had been looking for a solution for this for quite a while AND it was the perfect color! This was going to go in our kitchen where my girls have their own small work table. After using it I quickly realized why this was NOT a good solution. The caddy had these horizontal bars and the pencils and markers would often slide right out spilling onto the floor or table. Other times the pens would simply get stuck in the slats and drag along the table.

After months of using this broken system my next attempt was trying a box. I put all the crayons, markers, pencils etc. into a box in our new “Kid Work Zone” (pictures coming of that next week in Part 2 so stay tuned). That lasted about a few days before I realized that it was also not working. It was WAY too much work and too many steps for my busy kiddos to get their things in and out of.

To the drawing board once again! Next, I grabbed this cute little double utensil caddy I had purchased a few months back to use for birthday parties and summer entertaining. I found it at Joann’s Fabrics. It was perfect for markers and crayons and easy for my kids to grab and go.

Then I went to The Container Store and purchased this white pencil cup for the many kinds of pencils and a matching notepad holder for the miscellaneous packages of specialty crayons etc.

All in all we are much happier campers. The kids can easily grab what they need and put it back much easier! And that makes me one happy, organized mom! If you have not realized already, even an organizer can get challenged by things! I often tell my clients to try something and if it doesn’t work then try something else. But the point is not to get discouraged and feel like a failure, but to keep trying till you find the right solution.

I’d love to hear from you. What are you doing to keep your kiddo’s writing supplies wrangled?

If you have children you are probably in the thick of summer camp registration. Soon school will be out for summer and happy boys and girls will invade camps everywhere. With lots of children comes lots of gear. Shirts, shorts, shoes, backpacks, goggles, balls, swimsuits, towels, it’s endless! With so many kids and so much stuff it’s easy to see how your little one can easily get her blue towel confused with someone else’s blue towel.
The solution: customized labels. I ordered some of these labels last summer when my daughter started a summer program and I LOVE them. I ordered the iron on labels and put them on my daughters towel, swimsuit cover ups, shirts, and her jackets in the Fall. They work well and held up great to multiple washes.
This year I am ordering the adhesive labels in both sizes and the Press n’ Stick Clothing Dots. Lovable Labels offers a discount if you purchase three or more types of labels so choose wisely. These will be perfect for labeling water bottles, beach/pool toys, even notebooks when it’s time for back to school. I can’t wait!
Now your child will know exactly which Hanna Montana or Spider Man swimsuit is his or hers.
Your child not coming to tears over which beach ball is hers at the pool…priceless!
Enjoy the good life!

Cleaning out your closet is hard to do! In fact Shop Smart Magazine’s recent survey of women revealed that “64% find the stuff they no longer wear hard to get rid of because they might need it some day.” I have found that there are Four Reasons People Hold On To Clutter and the second reason is “I may need it someday”. This reason can be difficult to break, but you should consider if the item is replaceable and how much it would cost to replace it if you actually did need it. Did you know that we only use 20% of the items in our closets 80% of the time? So would it be worth more to hold on to things you will most likely never need or to run to the store and purchase the specific item if you need it?
This can ring especially true when we are talking about the clothes in our closets. If, for example, the big shoulder pads from the 80’s come back in style (which there are rumors that this is coming) that does not mean that a.) the same patterns and prints from the 80’s will also be back in style and b.) that you are even the same size as you were in the 80’s. They also reveal that “51% of women cling to clothing they haven’t worn in three or more years”.
So take a deep breath and repeat after me: “I am ditching my dated clothes that no longer represents me and I am only keeping what makes me look and feel fabulous. Because that’s what I am”! Woo hoo!!!!! So repeat this mantra as you go through your closet. Don’t let those old pregnancy over-all’s or that old broom skirt get the best of your closet. Your mission is to keep what represents you today not who you were in the past. The old clothes are just that…old clothes, they are not you, they are not a former relationship, they are just clothes.
I want to hear your clothes break through! Post a comment or send me an e-mail.
A closet that represents who you really are…oooh that’s the good life!
Enjoy!
