My goal is to help people create a space that supports them, mentally, physically, and aesthetically. When you are free from the chaos you have the capacity to create more of what you want.
Whether you are moving cross country or across town, moving costs money. In fact, moving cost calculators estimate it can cost between $0.65-$0.86 per pound of stuff you move. So is it really worth it to move those boxes of books you read 15 years ago? Here’s a list of the of the Top 10 Items You Should Sell Instead of Move.
May is National Move Month, so this month I have been giving you lots of tips to help make your move easier. Here is a tip for after you move: when you are moving there are many places you have to change your address and contact information. Don’t forget to update your voter registration. Here is a quick and simple state by state guide for what you need to do to make sure you get registered in your state.
Don’t forget, if you or someone you know are moving in the Austin, Texas area, POSH Space can help get your home unpacked in just a few short days rather than months or years it takes many people. Click here to learn more about our 3 Day POSH Unpack and other services.
If you’re planning to move this summer, you may want to start figuring out what you can and cannot pack on to a moving truck. There are a variety of items that movers may decline to move for you. A good rule of thumb is: if the item is explosive (such as ammunition), combustible (such as propane or alcohol), or hazardous (such as ammonia or house paint) you should either safely dispose of the item, or plan alternate methods for transporting it.
Here’s a list of some of the most common items not to move, as recommended by the American Moving and Storage Association (AMSA):
Bleach
House paints
Open containers of liquid
Propane tanks or cans
Gas or oils
Butane
Ammunition
Open alcohol containers
Open, non-sealed food containers
Aerosols
Fire Extinguishers
Welding Gas
Antifreeze
Disinfectant cleaners (especially those that contain bleach or ammonia)
If you live in the Northeast and are planning a move this year, take a look at this video from the USDA and be sure you are not bringing the pesky Gypsy Moth along with you to your new home. You can learn which states are prone to these Gypsy Moth and what to look for at yourmovegypsymothfree.com.
If you are moving this summer and are starting to get a little uneasy about how to select the right mover, here’s an article I found on “How to Find a Reputable Moving Company”. I found this on a site called MovingScams.com, which was created by a person who says he was scammed by a large moving company. Now his site offers a message board that is run by unpaid volunteers. You can ask questions and get answers from this group whose mission is “… providing solid, impartial consumer education and to working for better consumer protections in the moving industry”.
Sofia Vergara, best known as Gloria on the hit TV show Modern Family, recently appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live and talked about the ease and convenience of hiring an organizer to help her unpack her house during a recent relocation. Check out the video below, which begins just after Jimmy asks her about her move and she admits to hiring an organizer for the job. (The conversation ends a minute in to the video, but of course you can keep watching.)
