Thanks Peter Walsh

by Angela on January 9, 2012

Woo hoo!  A BIG Thanks to Peter Walsh who recently posted a list of Organizers he recommends, and you guessed it, POSH Space is on the list!

The above picture is me and my buddy (I wish!) Peter at one of his book signing a few years ago in Reno.

Peter’s new show Extreme Clutter is on the OWN Network Monday nights at 9:00 Central.  I can’t wait to watch it tonight!

Organizing DVDs

by Angela on December 20, 2011

DVD’s have always been a growing problem area in my house.  My kids seem to get new DVD’s all the time.

So about a year ago I set up these bins to hold all my girl’s DVD’s.  There was a little bit of room left which quickly was occupied by new movies.  My girls are fortunate to have a teenage neighbor who passes along  movies to my girls that she’s outgrown, but this means we always have a steady stream of movies coming in.

The problem was that I didn’t just want to take the DVD’s out of the bulky cases and just slip them in a sleeve.  I wanted to keep the cover so both my girls could easily see what the movies are.

The other problem was that my girls were not putting away the movies once they finished a movie.  That was mostly my fault for not having a clear labeling system that even my 4 year old could follow.

The I ran across the perfect solution on one of my favorite fellow bloggers sites: I heart Organizing.  I found these movie sleeves at my local Target!  I love them because they can hold TWO DVD’s and the cover!  This was just what I had been looking for!

So to save you the trial and error trouble I went through, here is what I did.  Insert the discs in the disc holder and then carefully remove the DVD cover from the original case.  Now you will have to fold it so the spine is either facing the front or back.  What I found to work best was if you folded the spine so that the back cover of the DVD and the spine were both showing at the same time as shown above.  Then I inserted that into the media sleeve and then inserted the DVD sleeve in so you could still see spine.

You can see the back of the media sleeve will show a little white from the DVD cover since you folded the spine with the back DVD cover.

Now, if you folded the cover right then you will see the titles of each movie easily so you can quickly read which movie you are looking for.  Again, this was trial and error for me.  The first 7-8 I folded wrong and had to redo.

Since we inherit some of our movie we don’t always have the covers, so I just made a quick label for those.

So you may have noticed that to create my labels I simply used a paint sample strip.  I got mine at Sherwin Williams and like them because they are wider than others.  This was a easy, inexpensive, and colorful way to add dividers to help my girls put the DVD’s back where they belong.

I used the same color strip for each divider I just alternated using them right side up and upside down because I liked the colors.  I used alphabet stickers I found at the craft store for my labels.

Overall, I was able to fit about 98 DVDs in just ONE box instead of the four boxes I had been using! Because of the sleeves I was also able to put some series movies into one sleeve.  For example we have several Barbie movies that are just a single movie and I was able to fit two movies in one sleeve.  Loved this transformation!

Uh Oh…My Computer Scare!

by Angela on November 2, 2011

Last week I told you that October is Cyber security Awareness month and that I would fill you in on my story.

What’s that old saying?  “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of…”  Well in relation to your computer, it’s definitely worth the time it would take you to fix your computer.  A few weeks ago I started to notice one of our computers was acting odd.  One morning I walked into my office and found the computer was on, even thought the day before I know I had turned it off.  I then of course tried to turn it off and found that was the problem – the computer would not shut down.   I had to manually hit the off button.  So I called Laurie, who had been referred to me by a friend. Laurie came over and worked on all three of my computers.  She updated, got them all protected with a software she recommended, and cleared off a virus from my computer that was not turning off.  Of course…just as you might suspect, when Laurie came the computer had no problem shutting off for her!  Isn’t it funny how that works?

So about a week later I turned the computer on and it started making this screeching beeping sound.  I instantly shut the computer down and restarted it. So then I brought in my husband in and asked him if he knew what it was.  He did not, but opened the computer up and started jiggling things and banging around.  Hmmm…this was going nowhere fast.  So I thought about Laurie and gave her a call.  I left her a message telling her what was going on and held the phone so she could hear the screeching beeping sound.

Minutes later Laurie called me back and said “whatever you do, DO NOT turn the computer off, your hard drive is about to die”!  She told me to make sure everything was backed up before I turn it off and that once I turned it off it would likely not come back on.  Fortunately, this is not my main computer, it’s the computer my assistant uses when she is in the office so I didn’t have much on it but I DID have some very vital documents on this computer.  So we did back up the documents we did have.  The entire ordeal was quite nerve racking.  I was so grateful to have Laurie’s advice at that moment when I needed it most!

Above is a picture of the old dead computer sitting on top of some of the new computer boxes.

Laurie had mentioned she had a list of the computers she recommends and she sent those over.  I reviewed them and just this week I got my brand new computer!  I’m so excited!  My new computer will take the place of my old CPU and my assistant will use my old CPU. Fortunately I do backup my main computer with an external hard drive here at home and with an online backup site.

Are you ready to see what you could do to better protect your family computer?  After working with Laurie I was so impressed with her skill and knowledge that I interviewed her to pick her brain.  You can purchase this audio Security in a Digital World, which is the first of my POSH Audio Interview Series by clicking here.  Or visit Laurie’s blog to get more tips for keeping safe during Cyber Security Month.

The Healing Power of Women

by Angela on April 16, 2011

There must be something in the water or maybe it’s a seasonal thing.  But lately I have heard from more friends and family who are getting sick or injured.  My yoga instructor took a tumble and injured her knee and shoulder, my beautiful and very active mother discovered she has several knee problems/injuries and may not be able to exercise the way she used to, a dear friend was in and out of the hospital for months due to a car accident and the resulting surgeries, a sweet and beautiful aunt found out she has cancer, another friend has two brain tumors, and two friends are walking around with air boots on due to foot/ankle injuries, just to name a few!

But what amazes me about all these beautiful women it their resilience.  Some of these things are minor and some are much more serious, but I am amazed at how these women push on.  They aren’t letting these injuries and illnesses hold them back.  It’s almost as if some of them have decided: “I am bigger than YOU, illness, and I will beat you.  Don’t you get in my way!”

To all these amazing, beautiful women in my life my heart goes out to you; I salute you; I gain strength from you; and give strength to you.  This is my tribute to you.

Stay amazing, stay strong, you are an inspiration, you are beautiful.
