Gift Wrap Organizing Part 5

by Angela on December 28, 2011

Now that the holidays are over, here are a few final unique ideas for gift wrap storage.

Pictured above is a great idea for long-term gift wrap storage solution.  Use galvanized wire or twine and a few screws to turn your unused closet ceiling space in to a handy gift-wrap storage area.  Thanks to Frank Farm for this idea! Love the use of this often forgotten space!

Here is another unique idea to store lots of gift wrap in a nice compact area.  Use the Rationell Varirera plastic bag dispenser from Ikea.  This can also be used to store large pieces of paper or scrapbook paper.  Thanks to the blog Gall-erry from Germany for this fabulous idea!

Gift Wrap Organizing Part 4

by Angela on December 21, 2011

This round of gift wrap organizing is dedicated to people with less space.  In the photo above from BHG they used a desktop file box to hold rolls of gift wrap.  They used a wall mounted grid system which holds different size baskets for all your gift wrapping  accessories.  You could put this in a closet or a corner of a desk.

A gift wrap drawer!  I love this!  This comes from blog The Complete Guide to Imperfect Home and would be perfect in the bottom drawer of a guest room.

Now this simple compact gift wrap center from Home Made Simple may take the cake!  Use a laundry hamper to hold rolls of gift wrap.  They used over the door hooks to hang bags from with gift wrapping essentials.  Store the hooks and bags inside the basket when your gift wrapping is complete.  Love how portable this self contained gift wrapping wonderland is!

Next Wednesday will be our last set of gift wrap center ideas for this year!  You can also see my previous posts Gift Wrap Organizing, More Git Wrap Organizing, and  Gift Wrap Organizing Part 3.

Gift Wrap Organizing Part 3

by Angela on December 14, 2011

Tis the season for gift wrap and gift wrap organization!  If you follow my blog you know I’ve been posting weekly on Gift Wrap Center Organization.  In Part 1 Gift-Wrap Organizing I shared some tips on using the back of a door or built-in shelves to organize gift wrap and Part 2 More Gift Wrap Organizing I shared three clever ways to organize ribbon. This week I will share thee creative ways to organize a variety of gift wrap supplies.

In the picture above from BHG I like the use of the wire fruit basket to keep all the bows, ribbon, and gift tags close at hand on the counter but still looking gorgeous!  It looks very Anthropologie to me.   If you have a favorite wrapping paper that you use for everything you may want to consider a wrapping paper dispenser as show here.  What a smart idea!  You will never loose your roll of wrapping paper again in the sea of presents, paper, and tags while you are in a wrapping frenzy.  You should also be able to tear the paper off the dispenser too and it should be a straight line! What a fun idea!

In this picture from Real Simple they use a tiered slack hanger to store ribbon and tissue paper.  Skirt hangers were used to hold folded gift wrap and gift bags.  In the back on the left you can see a multi-pocket shoe organizer that is being used for gift tags, ribbon and tools.

Finally, this simple and clever idea to store rolls of wrapping paper using a wine rack comes from Scrapbooks etc.   Another great idea for keeping paper close at hand during the holidays so your paper isn’t getting lost in the shuffle.  So simple yet so smart!  Love it!

DIY Advent Calendar

by Angela on December 10, 2011

This year we started a new tradition in my house.  As a child my husband always had an advent calendar where you would open the little cardboard door and pull out a chocolate.  This year I thought it would be fun for my girls to start this tradition so I went out in search of a very simple cardboard advent calendar.  I couldn’t find one anywhere!  So I decided to make one.

I was trying to keep it simple (well, that is easier said than done!) and I wanted to incorporate foreign treats.  My husband spent several years in Germany as a child so I wanted to have some of his favorite treats.  So I purchased.  Lebkuchen from Germany, Toblerone Swiss Chocolate, Italian Amaretti Cookies, and Jammie Dodgers from England…oh and Hershey Kisses from America!

I purchased some simple treat boxes from the craft store.  There were 10 boxes per package.  I also purchased five gift card boxes.

I had some metal rim tags that I stamped with the days leading up till Christmas. I usually purchase these at an office supply store but you may also be able to find them at a grocery store.

I already had the number/letter stamps.  You should be able to find something similar at a craft store.

I tied ribbon around the polk-a-dot boxes and ran the tags through the red ribbon.  For the Santa boxes I used a hot glue gun to glue black velvet ribbon to the box and then glued the tag to the front of the box like Santa’s belt!  I put all the boxes on a cupcake stand.  My girls can’t wait to open these boxes each day!  They helped me fill the boxes so they know what sweet treats await them!

The good thing is that all this can be used again next year!  We just slip the ribbon off and the boxes fold flat so they will be easy to store! I love it when things work out that way!  If you don’t want to give your children sweet treats everyday you could insert notes with holiday themed activities like reading a Christmas story , watching a favorite Christmas movie, going out to look at Christmas lights, or what ever is your family’s favorite holiday activity!

More Gift Wrap Organizing

by Angela on December 7, 2011

This month I am bringing you lots of tips and ideas to help you get your gift wrap center organized. Here are a few ideas I found to organize ribbon. (Click any image to view its source.)

Spools of ribbon stacked and organized on a paper towel dispenser.

This is so clever, who knew there were so many ways to use a paper towel holder? I love this idea from Real Simple. This is especially handy during the busy holiday season. If you don’t have enough space to keep it out all year you may just want to use this idea to keep everything wrangled while you have a lot of gifts to wrap.

Spools of ribbon stored on a hanging pants holder.

Another great gift wrap organizing idea! I LOVE this idea! Store small spools of ribbon on hanging trouser organizers, and gift tags and decorative pieces in a hanging accessory bag. This is the best use of a trouser/pant hangers I have seen. I normally do not recommend these hangers for pants, but they are great for ribbon.

I have seen ribbon boxes at several stores, those are boxes with pre-cut holes that you can stick the ribbon out of while keeping the ribbon in place. But the problem with those boxes is that you often get a variety of sizes of ribbon and the ribbon doesn’t always line up with the holes. So fellow blogger Spunky Junky came up with the fantastic idea. Use these white plastic boxes that are inexpensive and can be found at many big box stores like Target and Walmart. Simply insert the ribbon on a small dowel and place inside the box and the put the end of the ribbon through the nearest hole! I like this because there are so many holes you can fit several spools of ribbon, especially the thin ribbon.

Gift-Wrap Organizing

An organized shelf area with gift wrap suspended on tension rods and ribbons in boxes.

Tension rods in a shelf organizing system.

The holidays are knock, knock, knocking at our door so what better time to get your gift wrap organized?  I’ve found some great examples of gift wrap organization and inspiration.   I’ll share my favorite tips  and over the next few weeks I’ll post a tip a week on gift wrap solutions.

Pictured above is a gift wrap center from Better Homes and Gardens (BHG).  I love the clever use of the tension rods in this system!  These are easy to install and you don’t have to worry about damaging your walls!  You should be able to find tension rods at your local hardware  store.  Use the shelves above to store ribbon as pictured or get slightly larger decorative boxes to store tissue paper, gift tags, or gift bags.  You could also use the drawers below the gift wrap for extra supply storage.

Photo of an over-the-door hanger holding rolls of gift wrap and ribbons neatly organized.

If you keep up with my blog you know I’m obsessed with using the back of the door to organize.  I think a few years ago I called it doorganizing!  The picture above is also from BHG but this one uses a  behind the-door organizer.  I like this idea because this is more realistic in most homes.  Unfortunately most people cannot dedicate an entire closet to gift wrap but they can dedicate the back of a door.  I like how the tissue paper is hung over one of the rods.  If you are loving this you can find this  product from the  Chefs web-site.  It is actually designed and sold for the pantry and contains 6 adjustable shelves, in the picture above it looks like they removed 1-2 or the shelves.  Again, love this because you can hang it over the door.  One problem is that the rack does not appear to be secured at the bottom. You can try some large 3M Command Cord Bundlers on each side on the bottom to try to hold it in place.

Photo of a door with bars mounted on it, suspended from which are rolls of wrapping paper and baskets of ribbon and scissors.

Here is another behind the door organizing project from the blog A Brooklyn Limestone in Progress.  She used the IKEA Bygel rail system.  This should be a pretty easy and inexpensive project.  The empty space you see in the top bar has hooks hanging from it which could be used to hang gift bags.  You could also add another bar at the bottom of the door for extra storage.

I’ll have more gift wrap organization and inspiration coming next week.  Is your gift wrap center an organized vision of beauty?  I’d love to see it and possible share it on my blog.  Go to my comment page and send me a note! Hmm…all these fabulous ideas have my brain thinking how I can improve my own gift wrap center!  We’ll see!
