$10 Off Sherwin Williams

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

piggy-bankSpring cleaning is in full force and just in time I found a fantastic offer from Sherwin Williams.  If you are working on your own home make over the easiest and least expensive thing you can do to make a big impact is to reduce your clutter!  But you probably knew I was going to say that.  The second thing you can do is to paint the walls.  Changing your paint color can add a huge impact with a small price tag.

Visit Sherwin Williams and use their Color Visualizer, which allows you to upload a picture of your own room and then “try on” different colors.  Or you can choose from a scene from multiple room options on the site.  It’s quick and easy.  Once you have completed your virtual makeover you can hit the print button to retrieve your coupon, a photo of your new and improved room, and a list of the colors you used.

The coupon appears to expire on April 25, 2010, or at least that is what printed up for me as I tested this.  The offer is for $10 off a purchase of $50 or more on non-sale merchandise. See the coupon for exact details.

I just painted my new office using Sherwin Williams “Hopsack”.  So you can take a peek at that on the Color Visualizer if you would like.

Enjoy your make over for a little less!

What To Do With Framed Photos

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

frame_heartRecently I’ve had a few clients ask me “what do I do with all these old picture frames”?  Let me set up the scenario for you.  Sally has collected pictures of her 7 year old daughter and her 10 year old son since they were born.  Every year she frames each child’s class picture in the same frame as the year before.  However, she also has a number of other framed photos from special events and holidays.  Sally has found that throughout the year she has ended up with a few boxes of old framed photos that she no longer wants to display.  But she is not sure how to store these framed photos.  After all, these are some of her most prized and favorite photos.

Sound familiar?  Here is what I recommend to my clients: First remove all the photos from the frames.  Be careful as sometimes the photos become attached to the glass and you may tear your photo if you’re not careful.  Make a pile of your photos and a pile of your picture frames.  After you have separated all the photos from the frame go through the frames and decide which ones you are going to keep to use in the future and which ones no longer reflect your style or décor.  Ideally you will want to reduce the number of frames by 75% keeping only your favorite frames.

Next you need to decide what to do with the photos.  I recommend that you create a photo album that only contains the photos that you have displayed in frames.  This will be a cherished album with the best of the best and surely one you will look at for years to come.

So don’t let all those old framed photos take up room in your closets.  If they were important enough to be framed and displayed then they should not be sequestered to a shoe box in a hall closet.  Give your pictures a new life while reducing your clutter.

Enjoy a lighter trip down memory lane!

What To Do With Holiday Artwork

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

valentine-decorBetween Valentines, Easter, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas if you have children, the chances are you have loads of children’s artwork and projects revolving around each holiday.  Parents are always asking me “What do I do with all this holiday art?”  Here is what I suggest.

My first recommendation is to only save your favorite pieces of artwork and your child’s favorite pieces of artwork.  Simply ask your child which Valentine’s decoration is their favorite.  If you have a prolific child who has created a 10-20 Valentine’s decorations then you can ask them “what are your top five favorite pieces?”  This will let you know what you really need to keep and what you can let go of.  This is an important step.  Don’t assume that your favorite pieces of artwork will be the same your child’s favorite pieces.  If you have a favorite piece that your child does not care for, it’s okay if you save it too.  Just be sure to limit yourself to the same quantity as your child.

After the favorites have been gathered add the artwork to your holiday decoration box.  Next year when the holiday comes back around then you can pull out the artwork and use it to decorate.  Your child will be proud to see his or her work from the years past and you have quick and easy decorating solutions for your child’s room.  You can also get your child or children involved and have them help you hang up the artwork.

If you find that you are not using a piece as you are decorating or it breaks or tears then you should consider getting rid of the artwork or adding it to your child’s memorabilia box or scrapbook.

Now your child’s art is not just getting stored in a box never to be seen again.  You are putting it to good use.

Here’s to a more festive holiday!

Give Your Files a Little Love

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

Filing SystemIt’s February the month for love and romance.  But did you know it is also archive your files month?   Yes, it’s time to show your files a little love!  So what does archive your files mean anyway?

If you don’t have a system in place for consistently purging and cleaning out your files on a regular basis you will probably get to a point where your file cabinet may be overflowing and stuffed with paper.  If this is the case for you then you may need to archive some of the files that you do not use or need on a regular basis.  If you don’t use the paper or files at least once a year then you can place the documents in a file cabinet or container in a closet, garage, attic, basement, etc.  Some examples of papers you can archive include your old tax files, old tax returns, and a limited amount of mementos or memorabilia.

The files you keep nearby in your home or home office should be the files you need to get to on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis.  You can take this opportunity to go through all your files and shred or toss out anything that is old and out of date.

Of course I recommend using the FreedomFiler filing system to help you get started with a paper filing system that will let you know how long to keep different types of paper and has built in systems that help you know when it is time to purge items.  It’s a fantastic product.

Happy archiving!
