One Product Makeover – Coat Closet Shelf

by Angela On May 24, 2012

I know organizing can be so much fun and can easily be SOOOO expensive!  It’s hard to resist all the amazingly beautiful products out there!  But organizing doesn’t always have to be expensive or ultra-complicated; sometimes just ONE product can make a huge difference.

{Photo from The Container Store}

This week I picked up a few of these “shelf stackers” is what I call them which is completely unofficial!  These came from The Container Store but you can get similar products from Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Wal-Mart.

I decided to tackle the top shelf of my coat closet.  You can see there is not much up there but when I need one of those things it is a pain to get the things down.  In the before picture you can see two unlabeled boxes one that houses hats and gloves and the other holds extension cords and power outlets.  In the picture you can also see two pink paper flowers (which are décor for an upcoming party), a video recorder, and an empty space where my camera bag goes (oops, I took it out to take the picture).

{I apologize for the poor quality of this photo, it was a cloudy day and slow shutter speed}

This may not look like a BIG difference but for me it was!  I’m short and now my camera is much easier to reach and I don’t have to battle with those paper flowers!  Also, I like that the glove box is out of the way since it is summer now and we won’t need them for a while.  If I had just stacked the boxes on top of each other and the flowers on top of that then if I needed something from a lower box then I could easily see things toppling over on my head.  Not good!  Once the flowers are gone this will leave me even more open space for something else.  I’ll have to think about what I can put there!

As an added bonus I decided to add these chalkboard labels from the new Martha Stewart collection from Staples.  The labels are great quality but as you can see the chalk was rubbing off easily.  I need to see if there is another option for this.

Cost for this makeover: $10.99!  I was thrilled!  This space had been bugging me for a while and to add something so simple and easy made me so happy!

What can you do with just one product?  Leave a comment below and let me know.
